On November 17, Zamorano University held the closing event of the Integrated Management of the R\u00edo Pl\u00e1tano Biosphere Project \u2013 MI Bi\u00f3sfera, funded by the European Union and implemented in coordination with the Forest Conservation Institute (ICF), FUNDER, and UNAG, with the support of key partners such as APROSACAO, Heifer International, and the Municipality of Dulce Nombre de Culm\u00ed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Over four and a half years (2021\u20132025), the project worked with more than 50 farms within the buffer zone of the R\u00edo Pl\u00e1tano Biosphere Reserve, demonstrating that sustainable livestock systems can contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and strengthened rural livelihoods. The initiative was grounded in applied research, technical assistance, extension, and farmer training.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The project intervened in over 3,000 hectares under a climate-smart livestock model, integrating:<\/p>

\u00b7 Silvopastoral and agroforestry systems<\/p>

\u00b7 Voisin Rational Grazing (PRV)<\/p>

\u00b7 Protection of natural regeneration<\/p>

\u00b7 Establishment of live fences and scattered trees<\/p>

These practices improved productivity, restored tree cover, and strengthened biological corridors essential for sustaining biodiversity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Impactful Results<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

1. Emission Reduction and Carbon Capture<\/strong><\/p>

\u00b7 The intervention area became a net carbon sink.<\/p>

\u00b7 Annual emissions decreased by 38.8%.<\/p>

\u00b7 A total of \u201312,553 tCO\u2082e were removed over four years, along with more than 10,000 tons of CO\u2082e sequestered according to project indicators.<\/p>

\u00b7 Deforestation decreased by 70%, with active restoration of secondary forests.<\/p>

2. Productive Restoration and Resource Protection<\/strong><\/p>

\u00b7 40%\u201360% of intervened areas entered restoration processes.<\/p>

\u00b7 Over 35,000 native and fruit trees were established.<\/p>

\u00b7 More than 25 water springs were protected.<\/p>

3. Improved Livestock Productivity<\/p>

\u00b7 +16% in milk yield per cow per day.<\/p>

\u00b7 +40% increase in productivity per hectare.<\/p>

\u00b7 Stocking rate increased from 0.7 to 1.1 AU\/ha.<\/p>

\u00b7 Feed costs reduced by more than 20%.<\/p>

4. Soil, Water, and Biodiversity<\/strong><\/p>

\u00b7 10% reduction in soil loss in managed pastures.<\/p>

\u00b7 More than 1,100 fauna species documented, including 169 vertebrates.<\/p>

\u00b7 Soils with higher organic matter and improved vegetation cover.<\/p>

\u00b7 Climate, biodiversity, and carbon monitoring implemented across the territory.<\/p>

5. Human Development and Community Strengthening<\/strong><\/p>

\u00b7 756 participants trained through 17 Livestock Field Schools.<\/p>

\u00b7 700+ producers trained, including 25% women leaders.<\/p>

\u00b7 230 producers certified in sustainable livestock management.<\/p>

\u00b7 83 members of the Pech Indigenous community completed a Diploma in Family Agriculture.<\/p>

\u00b7 Monitor farms now serve as living classrooms for regional replication.<\/p>

During the closing event, producers shared firsthand testimonies about how the project transformed their production systems and reshaped their vision of conservation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The project generated technical evidence for Honduras\u2019 National Decarbonization Strategy, the Forest Carbon Transactions Law (2023), and compliance with the European Union\u2019s EUDR Regulation. It also strengthened interinstitutional collaboration among Zamorano University, ICF, SAG, FUNDER, UNAG, Heifer, APROSACAO, and local governments, enhancing territorial governance and sustainable production models.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
